Albuquerque, New Mexico, is home to many excellent museums, which collectively provide a comprehensive insight into its storied past and colorful present. Make sure you check out these four museums during your trip. 

  1. New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science

Situated on Mountain Road in Old Town, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science is one of the top museums in the country. It gives you an opportunity to explore 12 billion years of natural history.

The museum features an extensive collection of artifacts and exhibits related to New Mexico’s unique natural history, as well as informative displays that can engage visitors of all ages. Highlights include a “live” volcano, the first personal computer, and the 100-foot-long, 30-ton skeleton of a Seismosaurus, the largest dinosaur in the world. It also has a 3D movie theater and a planetarium, as well as several temporary exhibits.

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

  1. Albuquerque Museum

Also located on Mountain Road, Albuquerque Museum provides an in-depth look at the rich cultural heritage of Albuquerque. It relates the history of the city from pre-Spanish contact to the Civil War and beyond through an impressive collection of artifacts. Some of the notable items you’ll find in this museum include Spanish conquistadors’ armor pieces and a 19th-century chapel. In addition, there are about 7,000 artworks on display, including the works of Georgia O’Keefe, Peter Hurd, and other famous local artists.

The Albuquerque Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday.

  1. Indian Pueblo Cultural Center

If you’re interested in the history of the Pueblo Indians, there’s no better place to visit than the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. This museum is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting artifacts related to the history and culture of the 19 Pueblo tribes in New Mexico. Its permanent collection consists of thousands of rare Pueblo artifacts and artworks, including pottery, weaving, baskets, jewelry, paintings, murals, and photographs. It also features rotating exhibitions and a world-class library with thousands of rare books and documents on the Pueblo Indians.

Located on 12th Street, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

  1. University of New Mexico Art Museum

The University of New Mexico Art Museum is home to the largest collection of fine art in New Mexico. It showcases a wide selection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints, with particular strengths in the Transcendental Painting Group’s works and American prints. It also features the works of world-famous artists such as Picasso, Rembrandt, and Georgia O’Keefe.

The University of New Mexico Art Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
